Introduction-

The PAN number is an alpha-numeric number made of 10 digits assigned to your identity, manly used for income tax related matters. The first five characters are letters from the English alphabet, the next four characters are numbers and the last character is also a letter.
 

Classification of PAN Characters-

The 10 characters of your PAN can be divided into five parts.

1. First three characters- The first three characters are alphabetic series between AAA to ZZZ based on random selection, the beginning of your PAN could be ALS, BEP or AAA randomly.

2. Fourth Character- The Fourth Character represents your status. Majority of individual PAN holders has the letter “P”, which stands for “person”. The other letters are A, B, C, F, G, H, J, L and T. The meaning of such letters is as under-

* In case of other than Individual- The Fifth Character represents the first alphabet of your name of the Entity. (As per Example 2), entity may be Company/ HUF/ Firm/ AOP/ Trust/ BOI/ Local Authority/ Artificial Judicial Person/ Government.

4. Sixth to ninth Characters- The next four characters are based a random selection or sequential numbers between 0001 to 9999.

5. Tenth Character- The last and tenth character is an alphabetic check digit. It is based on a formula which takes into account the first nine digits.


For Example 1 -      (In case of an Individual)

Ram Sharma has the PAN number is “AAAPS0626C”

Answer-

The classification is as under-

“AAA” These three character are randomly selected character between “AAA to ZZZ”

“P” represents the Person (means Ram is an Individual person)

“S” represents the first alphabet of  surname of Ram Sharma

“0626” These four characters are randomly selected number between “0001 to 9999”

“C” represents the alphabetic check digit which is generated by applying a formula to the preceding nine letters and numbers

 

For Example 2 -      (In case of a Firm)

M/s Shri Ram Alloys has the PAN number is “AAKFSS0626C”

Answer-

The classification is as under-

“AAK” These three character are randomly selected character between “AAA to ZZZ”

“F” represents the Firm (Partnership)  (means M/s Shri Ram Alloys is a Firm)

 

“S” represents the first alphabet of  your name of Entity (M/s Shri Ram Alloys)

“0626” These four characters are randomly selected number between “0001 to 9999”

“C” represents the alphabetic check digit which is generated by applying a formula to the preceding nine letters and numbers
